1. The City of Granite City Marker
Inscription. Granite City grew up a mill town, drawing its expanding population from the flood of Central European immigrants who came to this new land with not much more than their heritage and optimism, in search of freedom and opportunity.

Two German immigrant brothers, William and Frederick Niedringhaus, changed the face of what was then called Six Mile Prairie, a farming area located in the rich bottom lands east of the Mississippi River. In 1892 they purchased 3,500 acres and began building so they could relocate their enameled tinware manufacturing company from St. Louis.

In 1896 the Niedringhaus brothers incorporated their community as Granite City, named for the graniteware that had made them wealthy.

The true wealth Granite City has realized over the past one hundred years comes from the rich, diverse heritage each immigrant family brought to this community.

Erected 1996.
