| | [Sandy Spring Slave Museum & African Art Gallery] | |
Born a slave, a son of Charles County, Maryland; a historical figure trudging through the toils and injustices in life as a slave in Montgomery County, Maryland and Kentucky with integrity, fortitude, and stamina; escaped to freedom from slavery with his family, freeing many others along the Underground Railroad; established a stable settlement in Canada; self-educated, whose sermons, articles and books influenced millions and placed him in the company of icons including Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman as abolitionist and civil rights leaders.
His life's story memorialized through Uncle Tom's Cabin, a novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, fueled the sentiment for social change and black liberation and propelled the growing movement to abolish slavery in America.
"The power of words that raised the moral character of her people that brought freedom to a new nation."
