1. The Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition Marker
Inscription. Tennessee marked a century of statehood on June 1, 1896. Due to construction delays, it was not until the following year that 1,786,711 people passed through the gates of the Exposition to celebrate that milestone. With participation from around the nation and the world, Centennial Park was created and embellished with at least twenty major structures. The observance, initiated by the Tennessee Historical Society and directed by Eugene C. Lewis, an engineer and railroad executive, was an unprecedented artistic and financial success.
