St. Anne's Catholic Church Eastgate
Liberty County Historic Landmark
In 1948, the mission family decided to build a larger church. M.F. and Vlasta Janacek donated 2-1/4 acres near the first church, designing and supervising the new construction. The church was completed in 1949 at a cost of $20,000. Bishop Christopher E. Byrne dedicated the 300 seat brick building on October 16, 1949. The old church was converted into the parish hall.
St. Anne has been a mission of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Dayton since 1967 and continues to reflect the deep faith of the original Czech families who formed the community of Eastgate.

Eastgate is near the junction of Farm roads 1960 and 686, thirty-three miles northeast of Houston in western Liberty County. According to local tradition, the community was named for its location at the east gate of the fence crossing the Beaumont, Sour Lake and Western Railway. The town plat was drawn up by J. C. Perry in 1911, but it was not filed until two years later. The post office operated from 1912 to 1925. During the mid-1950s Eastgate had a peak estimated population of sixty and three businesses. Churches and scattered buildings remained dispersed in the area, and Eastgate was still listed as a community in 1990.(Submitted on September 22, 2022, by James Hulse of Medina, Texas.)
