Born March 16, 1813, in Washington County, Alabama, a son of Peter Cartwright, who came to Texas with his family. In Headright Certificate No. 156 issued to William P. Cartwright, February 15, 1835 for one-third of a league of land by the Board of Land Commissioners for Montgomery County it is stated that he arrived in Texas, December 22, 1832.

In Comptroller's Military Service Record No. 1106 it is certified that Mr. Cartwright served in the army from April 13, to July 13, 1836. He was a member of Captain William Ware's Company at San Jacinto but did not apply for any land for having served in the army.
