Inscription.

The War of 1812 had shown that a successful defence of Canada against an American attack depended upon secure supply lines. The Rideau Canal was built as an alternate to the easily attacked St. Lawrence supply route. Blockhouses were chosen as a means of defending the canal works. Lt. Col. John By. R.E., the Superintending Engineer during construction had planned Blockhouses for all lockstations. However, he was recalled to England to explain soaring construction costs and only four were finished.
