Role of Religious Leaders. . The ministry of Jefferson Street's religious leaders has always been demonstrated the integral relation between the church and the community at large and continues to do so today in the 1960's, local religious leaders used their influence to advance the cause of the Civil Rights movement. Kelly Miller Smith, former pastor of Nashville's historic First Baptist Church Capitol Hill and civil rights activist, defined the task of black religious leadership as the ability to organize the power and resources of the church around the vision of a transformed humanity and earth.
