1. The Occupied Tow in War and Reconstruction Marker
Inscription.
1862 Union troops camp at Murfree Spring from April to June. Confederate cavalry raid on the town and courthouse takes place during July. The Union occupation is lifted. Murfreesboro becomes headquarters for the Confederate army that winter.

1862-1863 Battle of Stones River starts December 31st and ends January 2nd. Union troops reoccupy Murfreesboro and stay for the remainder of the war. The First Presbyterian Church and other buildings are demolished for the use of their building materials. Fortress Rosecrans is constructed by Union troops.

1864 African Americans celebrate the Fourth of July at Murfree Spring. Stone's River National Cemetery is established.

1865 Celebration is held March 4th at Murfree Spring by African-Americans to celebrate their local emancipation anniversary.
