Inscription.
Mercer Cemetery, the first non-sectarian cemetery in New Jersey, is designated as a Trenton City Landmark. Organized in 1843, the cemetery was once the preferred final resting place for many of Trenton's prominent families.

The cemetery holds remains of more than 4,400 souls, including more than 150 veterans of the War of 1812, the Mexican American War, the Civil War, and World War I.

Beyond the human stories each grave represents, Mercer Cemetery is a treasure trove of artifacts. The variety of high-style monuments and simple gravestones with Victorian era motifs and carvings make it a sculpture garden where each stone is a piece of history.

Its blend of history, prominent location, and park-like setting makes Mercer Cemetery a portal to view the capital city's role in the Industrial Revolution and our nation's history.

Currently the cemetery remains closed to the public, open on request only. We are undertaking a multi-year restoration with the hope of welcoming visitors once completed.
