1. Sindia Marker
Inscription.
This is the top of the rudder post from the 329 foot iron hull bark Sindia. On December 15, 1901 the Sindia was grounded at 17th Street beach. The US Lifesaving crew from this station, under the command of keeper John Mackay Corson, facilitated the rescue of crew members. The ship was on a return voyage from China and Japan. Her captain was Allen McKenzie. The rudder post was the only visual sign of the ship. For years it could be seen on the beach or in the surf at 17th Street.
