1. A City Divided Marker
Inscription. The Lyceum, a public debating hall constructed circa 1848, stood on this site during the Civil War. Heated debates took place here prior to the Civil War on the state of the Union. Following the Battles of Antietam and Gettysburg, the Lyceum was used as a hospital for wounded troops of both armies.

More about this marker. In the center is a photo of the Hagerstown Lyceum. To the upper right is a photo of Dr. Charles Marcellus Chandler, Surgeon of the 6th Vermont Infantry Regiment, who served as the commander of the Lyceum and Courthouse Hospital in the weeks after the Battle of Antietam in 1862. At the bottom is a newspaper clipping. On July 29, 1863, the New York Times published a list of the wounded confined at the Lyceum Hospital. Most were wounded in the fighting around Hagerstown or fell ill on the campaign.
