1. Ivywild Park Marker

Inscription. This land you are standing on was already rich in history when General William Jackson Palmer founded the City of Colorado Springs in 1871.

This land was home to American Indian people for thousands of years. Cheyenne Creek and its majestic cottonwoods provided water, food and shelter aplenty for the first inhabitants of this land.

Ivywild was a city of its own for over 100 years before it was incorporated by the City of Colorado Springs in 1981.

Ivywild represents the true pioneering spirit of the Pikes Peak Region. In 1870, Joseph Dorr and his 14-year-old son Mark, arrived in nearby Colorado City after traveling from Des Moines, Iowa. Joseph soon opened a law office. In 1874, he purchased a homestead near here. His family left Des Moines for Colorado Springs in 1875. The trip took 42 days by covered wagon!

Once they arrived, they knew they had found a home in the shadows of Pikes Peak and Cheyenne Mountain. Between 1889 and 1901, Mark Dorr and his wife Nellie, bought half of his father's homestead and opened a real estate office nearby.
