1. Meharry Medical College Marker
Inscription. Eleven years post Civil War, today's Meharry Medical College was established to teach former slaves, who were dying of epidemic illnesses, the art of medicine in order to heal themselves and our community. Since 1876, Meharry has trained a significant portion of the country's African-American nurses, physicians, dentists, biomedical, scientists, and public health administrators. Today, it serves as a beacon of hope, meeting the health care needs of the underserved and underrepresented, regardless of race or creed, through education, research, and patient care, standing firm on its promise to diversify America's health professions workforce.
