To the crew of the U.S.S. Paddle (SS-263), who liberated them September 7, 1944, by sinking the Shinyo Maru.
To Lieutenant Colonel Rufus H. Rogers, senior officer of the 750 POWs, who heroically and continually interceded with cruel Japanese authorities to alleviate his men's suffering until his tragic death aboard the Shinyo Maru.
To the native Filipinos in the Liloy-Sindangan area of Mindanao, whose loyalty, kindness, and generosity prevented the POWs recapture and saved many of their lives.
To Brigadier General John Hugh McGee, USA, of the local guerrilla organization, who took charge of the group, organized and armed them, and arranged for their evacuation.
To the crew of the U.S.S. Narwhal (SS-167), who transported them to safety, treated their wounded and shared their own prized possessions with them.

The Shin'yō Maru incident occurred in the Philippines on September 7, 1944, in the Pacific theater of World War II. In an attack on a Japanese convoy by the United States Navy submarine USS Paddle , 668 Allied prisoners of war were killed fighting their Japanese guards or killed when their ship, Shinyō Maru , was sunk.
