Inscription.
W.E.B. DuBois graduated from Fisk University in 1898. He continued his education at Harvard University, where he became the school's first African American to receive a Ph.D. in History. Shortly thereafter, DuBois established himself as the first great scholar of black life in America. In 1905, he took the lead in founding the Niagara Movement, which was intended to be an organization advocating civil rights for blacks. The organization faltered, but was a fore-runner to the NAACP which was founded in 1909. DuBois played a prominent role in the NAACP's creation and became its director of research and editor of its magazine, "The Crisis."
