1. Congressman John Lewis Marker
Inscription. Congressman John Lewis holds a B.A. in Religion and Philosophy from Fisk University, and is a graduate of the American Baptist Theological Seminary. He is often called "one of the most courageous persons of the Civil Rights Movement ever produced." Lewis was instrumental in organizing the Nashville Student Sit-ins and countless non-violent protest. He was one of the 13 original Freedom Riders and served as the Chairman of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee from 1963 to 1966. He has been recognized as one of the Big Six leaders of the Civil Rights Movement and has been the recipient of numerous awards from imminent national and international institutions. His awards include the highest civilian honor granted, the Medal of Freedom, and the only John F. Kennedy "Profile in Courage Award" for Lifetime Achievement ever granted by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation.
