1. James Bevel Marker

Inscription. James Bevel received his B.A. from the American Baptist Theology Seminary in Nashville in 1961. He was a civil rights activist, minister, lyricist, and human rights advocate that gained a national reputation was one of Martin Luther King's top lieutenants in the freedom struggles of the 1960's. Mr. Bevel was philosophically committed to the notion that religion was part of the larger human rights struggle and that the church should serve as an institution of social change. He was chairman of the Nashville Student Movement from 1960-1961 and one of he founding members of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee.
