Inscription.
C.T. Vivian moved to Nashville in 1955 to enroll in the American Baptist Theological Seminary. That same year, he and other ministers founded the Nashville Christian Leadership Conference, which organized and trained students to embark on a movement to end segregation. Vivian was one of the SNCC members that continued the Freedom Rides into Jackson, MS after a group from Congress for Racial Equality disbanded. The group was arrested and Vivian was badly beaten at Parchment Prison. In 1965, he famously confronted Sheriff Jim Clark on the steps of Selma Alabama's court-house while leading blacks to register to vote.
