Manahawkin in Stafford Township in Ocean County, New Jersey — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Lane Drug Store (1890)
Stafford Township Historic Site
A small pharmacy was built on this site in 1890 for Dr. John Lewis Lane, who had grown up in Tuckerton, graduated from Jefferson Medical college in Philadelphia, and then returned to the area to practice.
While still a pharmacy, the less than 200 square foot building also served as the town's 1st telephone exchange, a polling place and the post office. Dr. Lane was the appointed postmaster between May 3, 1887 to April 2, 1889.
In 1964, the building was sold and moved to Smithville, NJ, to be preserved as one of the village's historic shops, shown in photo on right.
Photo to the left is the C.H. Cranmer family posing on their lawn next door to the Lane Drug Store.
Erected 2008 by Stafford Township Historic Preservation commission, Mayor Carl W. Block and the Stafford Township Council; installed as part of the Troop 23 Eagle Scout Project of Craig Edward Smith, Jr. "CJ".
