The John R. Turbyfill '53 Quadrangle

With heartfelt gratitude from the students, faculty and staff of Roanoke College, the lawn at the foot of the historical Administration Building was dedicated and so-named on October 23, 2008.
A member of the Roanoke College class of 1953, John R. Turbyfill was elected to the Roanoke College Board of Trustees in 1982 and served as chair from 1986 until his retirement in 2003. His tenure included oversight of a period of unprecedented growth and achievement culminating in the naming of his alma mater as one of the Best National Liberal Arts Colleges.
A native of Salem, Turbyfill graduated from Roanoke College as salutatorian with a Bachelor of Arts degree and went on to earn the L.L.B. degree from the University of Virginia Law School. Turbyfill had a long and distinguished career with the Norfolk & Western Railway and then with Norfolk Southern. He retired as Vice Chairman of Norfolk Southern Corporation. He has also been an active civic leader within the Roanoke Valley and Tidewater communities.
