1. Rowing History Marker
Inscription. Rowing was organized at Marietta College in 1871. Marietta raced the Duquesne Boat Club here in 1879, the first regatta. In 1880 a boathouse was built on the east bank of the Muskingum. It was swept away by the 1913 flood. Crew had died out by 1890 but regained life in 1929 through the efforts of the Kiwanis Club. They also built the present boathouse. Huge grindstones, produced locally, were placed on edge to form the walls. The Marietta College navy has rowed ever since except for the war years 1942-45. Women's crew began at MC in 1974, renewing the College as a cradle of rowing. Marietta High's crew program. sponsored by Kiwanis. began in 1965, and is one of many started by MC alumni in schools and colleges.

Erected by Marietta Kiwanis Club.
