Inscription. The Harmar Lock, located on the west side of the Muskingum River, was constructed in 1841 as Lock No. 1 of the lock and dam system. which was essential to navigation on this river. Its location was of great economic importance to Harmar. The lockhouse, built near the lock. was washed out in the 1913 flood, and replaced in 1914. Several large gristmills were built in conjunction with the dam. Only the concrete walls of this former 56' by 179' lock are now visible.
