Sneakbox
Fun Find
Photographed By Devry Becker Jones (CC0), October 29, 2022
This sneakbox, a one-person hunting boat, is indigenous to the Barnegat Bay. Sneakboxes have been made in our area since 1836. Easily navigable and able to operate in shallow water, the sneakbox gets its name from its ability to sneak up on ducks. Notice the camouflage cover used to further improve its ability to approach waterfowl undetected. The sneakbox is an example of local ingenuity and adaptability that define the early baymen.
Built by Gus Heinrichs at Tuckerton Seaport in 2001 • Donated in memory of Leonard Paul Potter in 2021
