1. General Francis Marion Marker
Inscription. A hero of the American Revolution, Marion would lead his band of men in sudden attacks on the British and then vanish into the swamps of Snow's Island, S.C., earning him the nickname “Old Swamp Fox”. Our town was named in his honor when it was chartered in 1849.

He earned his nickname as The Swamp Fox in November 1780, when his regiment evaded the British by escaping into a swamp following a seven-hour pursuit. "As for this damned old fox, the Devil himself could not catch him," said the pursuing British commander, Lt. Col. Banastre Tarleton.
