Within hours of the attacks of September 11, 2001, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) requested, and was granted, the use of Intrepid as a replacement headquarters for its New York Field Office. Five hundred agents worked around-the-clock aboard Intrepid, fielding 500,000 calls and coordinating the massive investigation. In addition to FBI command and control operations, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum also supporting Federal Emergency Management Agency, state and local emergency responders.
The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum has long supported law enforcement and first responders, and this monument is a tribute to their service and sacrifice on September 11 and in the rescue and recovery effort that followed.
Many companies and organizations that have worked with our supported the Museum also suffered terrible losses. This monument is dedicated to them and to the memory of all who lost their lives on that fateful day.
Lastly, this monument salutes those who have, in the years since 2001, stepped forward to wear our nation's uniform and serve in our defense.
We will never forget.
