Kamikaze Attack on Gun Tub 10
On October 29, 1944, Intrepid suffered its first kamikaze attack. A Japanese airplane struck Gun Tub 10, which was located in front of you. The gun tub was removed during Intrepid's modernization in the 1950s.
Intrepid was operated in the Philippines. Just after noon, a Japanese airplane hurtled toward Gun Tub 10, which was manned by a group of African American gunners under the command of Alfonso Chavarrias. The gunners bravely fired at the incoming airplane as it crashed into their position. Flames enveloped the gun tub and nearby catwalks. The attack killed ten gunners and injured at least eight.
The names below represent the crew of Gun Tub 10 on October 29, 1944. This list is based on U.S. Navy casualty records, as well as past interpretation at the Intrepid Museum.
