Inscription. This park and the nearby community are named for the Buena Vista Springs, located on this site. This natural resource, which continues to flow, was developed into a popular mineral water spa by the Buena Vista Springs Company in the late 19th century. In 1934, the Nashville Park Board purchased the land from the company and began development of a new park and recreational facilities. A two hundred-man encampment of the Tennessee Transient Bureau and, later, the Works Progress Administration developed the park over a period of years during the Great Depression. Remnants of stone work from this era are still evident ringing the hill near Hull-Jackson Montessori School. The park was leased to the U.S. Army during World War II for special field maneuvers.

In the early 1970s, the size of the park was increased to 76.8 acres through a land exchange with the developers of the MetroCenter complex. In 1976, the city dedicated the Z. Alexander Looby Library, Community Center, and Theater. Mr. Looby, an African American lawyer and businessman, provided key leadership during the Civil Rights Movement for equal

rights for all in Nashville and statewide. The swimming pool was added in 1979. In 1994, the Park Board granted permission for Metro Nashville Public Schools to locate two new schools on the site. Hull-Jackson Montessori School was completed on the north side of the springs in 1997, and John Early Middle School was built in 2007 on the south end of the property. The site improvements made in 2010 are the result of federal funds administered through the Metropolitan Development & Housing Agency in collaboration with the Cass Street Neighborhood Citizens Advisory Committee.
