1. Jacobs House, 1748 Marker
Inscription.
Job and Mary Jacobs built this house, the oldest in the square. It originally stood at 414 West Second Street in the Quaker Hill neighborhood.

The decorative brickwork gives the date of the house and the initials of the owners. The date is read in a backwards "X" pattern: 1, 7, 4, 8. The letters "I," "M," "I" in the interior of the design stand for Job and Mary Jacobs. In the 1700s, "I" and "J" were not considered to be separate letters. A diamond stood for the "&" sign used today.
