Jan den Haen
Hij werd in 1630 geboren in Gouda en verrichtte klusjes bij schippers in de haven. Van jongs af aan was hij gefascineerd van de zeevaart. Zijn moeder stuurde hem naar haar broer Cornelis Hola, kapitein bij de Admiraliteit van Amsterdam. Na jaren op verschillende schepen te hebben gewerkt was hij als kapitein betrokken bij de Slag bij Lowestoft. Hij veroverde het Engelse schip de Great Charity en kreeg als beloning een gouden keten en 10.000 Engelse ponden. Van dit geld kocht hij twee jaar later het Admiraalhuis aan de Turfmarkt in Gouda.
Jan den Haen was born in Gouda in 1630 and performed odd jobs for skippers in the harbour. From an early age he was fascinated by seafaring. His mother sent him to her brother Cornelis Hola, captain at the Admiralty of Amsterdam. After years of working on various ships, den Haen took part in the Battle of Lowestoft as a captain. He captured the English ship the Great Charity and was rewarded with a gold chain and 10,000 English pounds. He used this money to buy the Admiraalhuis on the Turfmarkt in Gouda two years later.
