Miami-Dade County

During WW II, Miami Dade County played an integral role in this
nation’s war effort.

The Army established three major schools on Miami Beach: the
Replacement Training Center, the Officer Candidate School
and Officer Training School. It also maintained the Depot Overhaul
School, Inspection and Maintenance School and Fourth Service
Command for Bakers and Cooks.

Twenty-five percent of the Army Air Force’s enlisted men and
twenty percent of its officers trained on Miami Beach.

The Navy established the Submarine Chaser Training School,
processing over 50,000 men, air stations at Opa-Locka Airport and
Dinner Key and constructed a blimp base at Richmond Field.

Army Air Force set up bases at Miami Airport and
Homestead Air Force Base.

720 soldiers from Miami-Dade gave their lives during WW II.
