Newcomb House
Old Newcomb College Campus
by Robert Little and Peter Middlemiss
In 1899, Josephine Louise Le Monnier Newcomb, benefactress of the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College, purchased this house as her residence. From her death in 1901 until 1918, when the College moved to Broadway Avenue, the house was known as "Newcomb House" and served as a residence hall for students. Although Mrs. Newcomb lived in the home for only one winter, ownership of the home established New Orleans as her legal domicile and helped to thwart a challenge to her last will and testament by her relatives. This allowed her considerable fortune to be used as she wished "for the present and future development of the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College," named in memory of her only daughter. Newcomb College of Tulane University was founded in 1886 as the first degree-granting college for women within an American university.
Erected by Newcomb College of New Orleans.
