Voerde als schout-bij-nacht het opperbevel over een geallieerde vloot in de Javazee, in een vergeefse poging de Japanse invasie van Java in 1942 tegen te houden. Hij was tegen de slag maar ging toch het gevecht aan. Zijn woorden 'all ships follow me' werden legendarisch. Doorman ging ten onder met zijn schip, samen met 2300 Amerikaanse, Britse en Nederlandse mariniers.
As rear admiral, commanded an allied fleet in the Java Sea in a futile attempt to stop the Japanese invasion of Java in 1942. He was outgunned but went into the fight anyway. His words 'all ships follow me' became legendary. Doorman went down with his ship, along with 2300 American, British and Dutch marines.

Excerpt: Karel Willem Frederik Marie Doorman (23 April 1889 28 February 1942) was a Dutch naval officer who during World War II commanded remnants of the short-lived American-British-Dutch-Australian Command naval strike forces in the Battle of the Java Sea. He was killed in action when his flagship HNLMS De Ruyter was torpedoed during the battle, having chosen to go down with the ship.(Submitted on November 22, 2022.)
