Inscription.
Second largest member of the deer family after the moose.
Can weigh up to 1,000 pounds.
May run as fast as 40 miles per hour.

Diet: Seasonal grasses, flowers and woody plants.

Range: Once widespread in Canada and the US, now mostly restricted to western North America. Male elk have large antlers that they grow and shed every year. During the spring mating seasons, males spar with each other and bugle - a loud vocal noise - to attract females.

Quick Fact - The elk's antlers may weigh as much as 30 pounds.

Conservation Corner
Elk were once common throughout most of North America and Canada but habitat loss and over-hunting have caused their numbers to dwindle.
