Port Washington in Tuscarawas County, Ohio — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Eckfield Square
In recognition of Patriotism far beyond the ordinary, in support of the World War II effort, Margaret and Frank Eckfield of Port Washington, Ohio gave seven sons, one daughter and one grandson to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
The call of the nation to arms affected many families, but to send eight children off to war left a very active household an extremely quiet place. It is reported that after the last child went off to war that their father Frank sent a letter to the President of the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt stating that "since you have all eight of my children do you want my dog, too?"
In recognition of the sacrifice of Margaret and Frank Eckfield and the ultimate sacrifice of Chief John Eckfield who was Lost at Sea on October 19th, 1944 off of the Philippine islands in the Pacific, the Village Square of Port Washington Ohio has been named Eckfield Square.
With great honor we name the family members of Margaret and Frank Eckfield who did their part in representing the Village of Port Washington, Ohio during World War II:
