Inscription. Cascade hops were originally developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Oregon in the 1960s, as a powdery mildew-resistant cultivar. Due to their strong, bitter flavor, they weren't initially popular, but after the price of German hops increased, Cascade hops were adopted by major brewing companies. Since then, they have grown to be considered the "quintessential American hop," and are prominently used by craft beer brewers.
