Willie Mays
— Richmond Walk of Honor —
Willie Howard Mays Jr., nicknamed "The Say Hey Kid" is a former New York and San Francisco Giants "Hall of Fame” major league baseball player. Willie participated in Richmond's annual March of Dimes events in this park during the 1960s and 1970s to assist our youth in need.
The City of Richmond is grateful to Willie and the Giants Community Fund for their generous contributions toward our youth programs over the past several years.
This first "Richmond Walk of Honor” kiosk and the Willie Mays Fields were made possible through the generous donations of the Giants Community Fund, the Good Tidings Foundation, the City of Richmond and the Hurlbut Benevolent Foundation (HBF)

Excerpt: Willie Mays is a baseball legend, but in Richmond he’s also known for his legendary community service benefitting local youth. It’s the reason the newly renovated Nicholl Park baseball diamonds have been renamed “Willie Mays Junior Giants Fields,” and why a monument to “The Say Hey Kid” was enshrined at those fields today on what the city officially recognized as “Willie Mays Day.”(Submitted on December 16, 2022.)
