Bishop Whipple
Bishop Whipple was elected in 1859 as the state’s first Episcopal Bishop. Enlarging Rev. Breck’s idea to have a religious university, Whipple is credited with building the Episcopal Cathedral, the Seabury Divinity School, and Shattuck and St. Mary’s School. For 42 years as Bishop he gained national attention and world recognition for his service to mankind.
St. Mary's School for Girls, 1866
Founded by Bishop Whipple, his mission was "to provide an education for girls that would be solidly fashioned — mentally, socially, physically, and spiritually." St. Mary's merged with Shattuck Academy for boys (formed in 1858), to create Shattuck-St. Mary's School as we know it today.

On June 30, 1859, Whipple was elected the first Episcopal bishop of Minnesota, an office he held until his death more than forty years later. In the spring of 1860 he moved his family to Faribault, establishing it as the see of the diocese. During his episcopate, Whipple guided the development of the Episcopal Church in Minnesota from a few missionary parishes to a flourishing and prosperous diocese. For many years, especially during the first two decades of his episcopate, he made regular missionary sojourns by wagon or coach through the rural areas of the state, often in mid-winter, preaching in cabins, school houses, stores, saloons, and Indian villages.(Submitted on December 6, 2022, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)

On June 3, 1858, in a small rented building in Faribault, Minnesota, The Rev. Dr. James Lloyd Breck established the Episcopal mission school and seminary from which Shattuck-St. Mary’s School(Submitted on December 6, 2022, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)has developed and prospered. Bishop Whipple established his home in Faribault and, in 1860, took over the reins of the school, changing Breck’s ambitious plan for “Bishop Seabury University” into something more realistic—”an honest school.”
