Inscription. Born into a noble family in Castile, Spain, Theresa lost her mother at age 14 and left home against her father's wishes to enter a Carmelite convent in 1535. Soon after, she began experiencing visions of God, angels and other spiritual entities. Finding her original religious house too lax, she founded several reformed Carmelite convents while facing fierce opposition from civil authorities. Theresa's mystical writing are considered to be classics of Western Christian spirituality. Her feast day is October 15.
