Grosse Pointe Shores in Macomb County, Michigan — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Gate Lodge & Garage
The Fords—especially Edsel—lived in the public spotlight. They considered security and privacy to be of the utmost importance. To enter the estate, you must pass through the guarded and gated opening in the monumental Gate Lodge building.
This imposing structure contains the security office and an eight-car garage with an automobile turntable and wash station accessed through a walled courtyard. Above the arched opening and flanking each end of the Gate Lodge building are living quarters: an apartment and two generous cottages for stall. By the 1930s, chief of security Thomas Loughlin and his family occupied the South Cottage, while chauffeur Arthur Fauser and his family lived in North Cottage.
Erected by Ford House.
