1. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Marker
Inscription. Raised in New York high society, Elizabeth married a wealthy businessman, but was left a penniless widow with five children when his business failed and he died of tuberculosis. Elizabeth converted to Catholicism in 1805. To support her children and their educations, she opened a private, secular school in Boston. She established a Catholic girls' school in Baltimore in 1808, initiating the parochial school system in America. The same year, she founded the Sisters of Charity, the first American religious community for women, and became its first Mother Superior. Canonized in 1975, she was the first American-born saint. Her feast day is January 4.
