The Mount Washington Arboretum seeks to provide a space for visitors to experience the world of nature and a community resources that is environmental, educational and recreational.
In 1979 a hurricane destroyed an apartment complex on this site. The Arboretum was founded in 1999 by the Mount Washington Preservation Trust, with the support of the Mount Washington Improvement Association. The vision, energy, hard work and dedication of these community volunteers have transformed this city acre into a living museum of trees, shrubs and flowers.
The Arboretum is intended to be a showcase for native plants, an example of sound ecological principles and a sanctuary from the modern world. It includes a variety of features that make it a unique place to experience, learn, rest and reflect.
