For 150 years, the estate at Druid Hill was owned by just two families, the Rogers and the Buchanans. The Mansion House, built in 1801, is the third residence to be constructed on the site. The second home, built by Nicholas Rogers in the late 1700s, had been destroyed by fire in the late 1700s, had been destroyed by fire in 1796.

In 1863, John H.B. Latrobe and George Frederick converted the residence into a public pavilion by adding ornate porches, twenty feet deep, on all four sides and a refreshment arcade in the basement.
