Fort Saskatchewan’s fort was established not because of fur trading but because of the North West Mounted Police. Following the March West in 1874, a group of NWMP would move north to establish the Sturgeon Creek Post as a fort on the south bank of the North Saskatchewan River. The fort was soon renamed as Fort Saskatchewan and became an important police garrison.
