1. On This Site Marker
Inscription. This was the gatekeeper's lodge and the arched gateway was the carriage entrance. When the main entrance on Pine Street was closed at night, admission to the Hospital was obtained by arousing the gatekeeper by means of a large iron knocker which hung from the door. In 1851 it was decided that the principal entrance should be removed from Pine Street to Eighth Street. From 1872 until 1879 the outpatient clinics were held in rooms in the gate house. Human Resources offices are now located here.
