The Walter Garrett Memorial Building opened here in 1897. It housed clinical facilities, operating rooms, an early x-ray service and a ground floor emergency department, replacing the "recent accidents" unit in the old Elaboratory. The growing reputation of the emergency service earned it the affectionate name "Receive" and the ambulance entrance became the landmark for this concept for 70 years.

The Preston Building opened here in 1971 as a maternity-education-research center. It is named for Dr. Jonas Preston, a 19th century Philadelphia obstetrician who bequeathed his entire estate to establish the Preston Maternity Hospital in 1836. Philadelphia's first lying-in hospital, it was well known as a training center in midwifery. In 1960 it became affiliated with Pennsylvania Hospital, but it retains its special identity with its own Board of Managers, all of whom also serve on the Board of Pennsylvania Hospital
