Highlands/Perkins in Baton Rouge in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana — The American South (West South Central)
LSU Campus Mounds (16EBR6)
History of the Mounds
The mounds were created by the First Peoples of North America. Experts believe these hunter-gatherers considered the mounds to be sacred and met there for ceremonial activities and secular events. Originally built where the Mississippi River made a turn to the south, they would have been a prominent landmark to anyone traveling on the river at that time.
When LSU moved from downtown Baton Rouge to its current location in the 1920s, the mounds were one of the reasons this site was chosen. Former Gov. Huey P. Long marked the mounds as a feature of the campus that should always be preserved.
