LSU Campus Mounds
Recognition of Tribes
These two ancient earthen mounds at the heart of LSU's campus are believed to have been built by the First Peoples in North America. By preserving these mounds, LSU pays respect to the past and those who built them. As the steward of this land, LSU is committed to maintaining a living and learning environment that embraces individual differences and recognizes the Indigenous peoples of our region who once occupied the land where our campus now sits.
The tribes now living in Louisiana are:
Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana
Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana
Jena Band of Choctaw Indians
Tunica-Biloxi Tribe
Adai Caddo Indian Nation
Biloxi-Chitimacha Confederation of Muskogees
