The 158th Regimental Combat Team was organized on May 11, 1944. The Regimental Combat Team concept was developed when the Southwest Pacific Command under General MacArthur realized many future enemy engagements would have to be fought on islands or within small areas of land against a limited number of enemy troops. A Regimental Combat Team consisting of combat, service and administrative troops, became a fighting unit that was suited in size and self-sufficiency to engage an enemy in battle without help from other units.

of the 158th Infantry Regiment which was activated from the Arizona National Guard in 1940, trained in the Panama Canal Zone in 1942 as the Army's first jungle trained unit and saw its first enemy action at Arawe, New Britain in 1943. Initially including the 147th Field Artillery Battalion, 506th Medical Collecting Company and the 1st Platoon, 637th Medical Clearing Company, other units were assigned to the 158th Regimental Combat Team depending on the extent of a mission. Invariably, full-sized divisions relieved it in battle, manned its bases and assumed its tasks as it moved on.

No known attempt has been made to recount the individual exploits of the dozens of units and the thousands of men who passed through this tough little command.

"No greater fighting combat team has ever deployed for battle."
- General Douglas MacArthur
