On February 16, 1852, Henry and Clement Studebaker opened the H&C Studebaker blacksmith shop on this site. In addition to blacksmithing, H&C Studebaker also built wagons and carriages.
The business grew rapidly and quickly outgrew the downtown site. By the late. 1860s, the newly renamed Studebaker Bros. Manufacturing Company shifted wagon production to the company's new plant on South Bend's southwest side. Carriage production remained downtown until the late 1880s when it to was moved to the new plant.

In 1874, other buildings replaced the original Blacksmith Shop on what became known as "The Studebaker Block. The corner was later home to The S. S. Kresge store until its demolition in the early 1970s. (Marker Number 1.)
