Excerpt on Antón Martín’s efforts to set up a hospital (in translation): In the spring of 1502 he started the foundation of the Hospital of Nuestra Señora del Amor de Dios, on some land on the road to Nuestra Señora de Atocha. He organized a ward for 20 patients and, cutting pine trees in Valsaín to continue the work, he died of pneumonia on Christmas Eve in 1553. His project continued with his brothers: they built the School of Surgery and Care dedicated to dermopathies, dentistry, otorhinolaryngology and urology. Felipe II expanded it with the Hospital of San Lázaro… It disappeared as a result of the Exclaustration law. Today the action of the Brothers of San Juan de Dios in Madrid continues at the Hospital de San Rafael, where the remains of Brother Antón are. In the 17th century, what used to be the Plaza del Hospital received the name of Antón Martín.(Submitted on January 12, 2023.)
